The job, in the employer's words

HSI is seeking a Technical Solutions Specialist I to join our Chemical Management team. This role combines advanced technical support, data management, system administration, and limited back-end responsibilities to help customers successfully manage and maintain their environments.

As a key technical resource, you will work closely with customers, Product, Development, and internal teams to troubleshoot complex issues, support data-related requests, perform system updates, and help ensure a positive customer experience. You'll spend significant time working with customer data using Excel, SQL, and internal platform tools to investigate issues, complete updates, and support reporting needs.

This position is ideal for a recent Computer Science graduate, junior developer, or early-career technical professional who enjoys solving technical problems, working with data, and collaborating across teams. While some programming knowledge is required, this is not a full-time software development role.

What You'll Do

  • Advanced Technical Support
    • Provide advanced technical support for HSI's Chemical Management platform.
    • Investigate, troubleshoot, and resolve complex application, configuration, and system issues.
    • Serve as a technical resource during customer escalations and support engagements.
    • Document issues, findings, and resolutions while partnering with Product and Development teams on defect investigation and resolution.
    • Determine which customer requests can be completed directly and which require escalation to Development.
  • Data Management & System Administration
    • Perform customer data-management activities including bulk imports, site assignments, catalog updates, and safety data sheet inventory maintenance.
    • Work extensively in Microsoft Excel to analyze, validate, manipulate, and prepare customer data for imports, exports, reporting, and system updates.
    • Review and troubleshoot data discrepancies, formatting issues, mapping errors, and data quality concerns.
    • Support data audits and validation efforts to ensure data accuracy and integrity.
    • Assist with user administration, system configuration, and customer environment maintenance.
  • SQL & Back-End Support
    • Execute approved SQL queries and scripts to support customer requests, reporting needs, and operational activities.
    • Work within approved back-end access and security protocols to complete lower-risk system and data-management tasks.
    • Analyze system behavior and investigate technical issues using SQL and other diagnostic tools.
    • Support reporting requests through data retrieval and analysis.
    • Maintain documentation related to data structures, processes, and support procedures.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration
    • Partner closely with Product and Development teams to resolve system issues and support platform enhancements.
    • Contribute feedback and observations to improve platform supportability and the customer experience.
    • Assist with testing and validation of platform updates and enhancements.
    • Participate in technical projects related to data imports, reporting, system administration, and platform optimization.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Development, Programming, or a closely related technical field. An Information Technology or related degree may be considered when combined with meaningful programming coursework, SQL training, or relevant technical certifications.
  • 3+ years of experience providing technical support to SaaS applications or enterprise software solutions.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including working with large datasets, formulas, lookup functions, pivot tables, filtering, sorting, data validation, and data analysis.
  • Experience performing data imports, exports, data validation, data cleanup, data mapping, or other customer data-management activities.
  • Working knowledge of SQL and relational databases.
  • Experience consulting with customers, end users, or internal stakeholders to resolve technical issues and support system configuration needs.
  • Understanding of programming fundamentals and experience with languages such as Python, Java, JavaScript, or C++.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to communicate technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to work responsibly with databases, scripts, access controls, and established security procedures.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting Chemical Management, EHS, or LMS platforms.
  • Experience with APIs, REST, SOAP, JSON, XML, and system integrations.
  • Experience supporting enterprise customer implementations.
