The job, in the employer's words

The mission of The New York Times is to seek the truth and help people understand the world. That means independent journalism is at the heart of all we do as a company. It’s why we have a world-renowned newsroom that sends journalists to report on the ground from nearly 160 countries. It’s why we focus deeply on how our readers will experience our journalism, from print to audio to a world-class digital and app destination. And it’s why our business strategy centers on making journalism so good that it’s worth paying for.

The New York Times is an industry leader in visual journalism with reporting that includes extraordinary news coverage, investigations, culture and lifestyle reporting. The Reporter Video team identifies compelling stories and brings the depth and breadth of our news report onto our site and other platforms through video that features the expertise of our world-class journalists.

We are looking for an experienced video editor with a portfolio that demonstrates the ability to deliver engaging work on tight deadlines. You will work across a range of newsroom video coverage focused on vertical video storytelling with The Times' world-class journalists on-camera. You have deep experience in breaking and ongoing news coverage, with a track record of creating digitally compelling short-form video journalism.

Your portfolio and work samples should reveal a strong grasp of modern mobile video storytelling, and it should show that you're a quick learner with creative ideas and the ability to work on small or large teams. You are collaborative and solid technically with a solutions mindset, detail oriented, organized and fast.

Please note we have two positions available in the newsroom. Please speak to your expertise and/or interest(s) in your cover letter:

  • News and Enterprise

  • Culture and Lifestyle (music and film to fashion and real estate)

These are in-office positions based in New York and include regular attendance in the office four days each week. We are open to a Senior Video Editor working out of our LA office for the News and Enterprise role only. There may be some flexibility to work remotely per your departmental guidance.

Responsibilities:

  • Video editing and color correction of news, culture, enterprise and investigative videos featuring reporters from across the newsroom.

  • Collaborate with video journalists and producers in the pre/post production process, including writing, structure and creative execution. Demonstrate excellent news judgment across projects.

  • Deliver top-notch product under intense deadline pressure, and without the need for direct supervision, continuous editorial guidance, or task management.

  • Work across a range of stories with various newsroom desks including culture and styles, often juggling multiple projects.

  • Work with animators to incorporate animation, motion graphics and house design styles into videos.

  • Experiment with different formats of vertical and mobile visual storytelling.

  • Guide junior staff on edits as needed.

  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.

  • You will report to a Senior Producer based in New York.

Basic Qualifications:

  • 8+ years of multimedia storytelling, video editing and production experience at a major news video outlet and/or production company. (Minimum 5 years of video editing experience.)

  • Strong digital video editing background.

  • Expertise in Adobe Premiere and Creative Suite.

  • Strong audio editing, mixing and fixing skills for video.

  • Proven ability to craft stories, own video research for a project and edit a video with oversight from managers and senior staff.

  • Thorough knowledge of current events, with experience covering news.

  • The ability to conceive and create fresh original videos related to the news.

  • Must have an impressive portfolio of video editing primarily for digital or broadcast.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience animating and editing animations in Adobe After Effects.

  • A digital first mindset to editing on-platform and for social media.

  • Familiarity with the latest video editing techniques and technologies.

  • The ability to make quick decisions under intense deadlines in a high-pressure newsroom setting.

  • A foundational knowledge of legal, ethical, copyright and usage issues for visuals.

  • Well-versed in the world of social and digital media, with a keen eye on what competitors are doing and what new tools are being used.

  • Willingness to work evenings and weekends.
