The job, in the employer's words

Who are we?

The Motley Fool is a purpose-driven financial services company on a mission to make the world smarter, happier, and richer. For 30 years, we’ve been helping people make better investment decisions through transparency, education, and a healthy dose of Foolish fun. We’re a fast-moving, collaborative team that values high-quality work, curiosity, and initiative. We care deeply about what we do, and we’re driven by the impact our work has on real people’s financial futures.

What does this team do?

Lead a high-performance development team delivering web applications to millions of users monthly in the fintech and media space. We value innovation, collaboration, and technical excellence. We are a remote workforce that uses Slack, Zoom, Jira, and agile development practices to keep in sync.

What would you do in this role?

As a Product Tech Lead, you’ll lead a fast-paced engineering team responsible for building and evolving the technology that powers our mission of helping people invest and become smarter, happier, and richer. This role combines hands-on technical leadership, people management, and cross-functional collaboration to deliver scalable, high-quality products and platforms.

But what does this role actually do?

  • Lead and mentor developers through regular 1:1s, coaching, technical guidance, and career development support.
  • Drive technical architecture and engineering decisions across products and platforms, balancing scalability, performance, maintainability, and business goals.
  • Lead technical discussions, planning sessions, and solution design reviews across engineering and cross-functional teams.
  • Partner closely with product, design, leadership, and stakeholders to align technical strategy with roadmap priorities and long-term business objectives.
  • Develop and maintain modern web applications.
  • Establish and promote engineering best practices, focusing on code quality, system reliability, observability, performance, and sustainable development practices.
  • Facilitate technical feedback through code reviews, pair programming, architecture reviews, and collaborative problem-solving.
  • Coordinate and communicate effectively with stakeholders, providing visibility into technical initiatives, risks, trade-offs, and delivery timelines.
  • Support delivery planning, prioritization, and execution while helping teams navigate ambiguity and evolving requirements.
  • Drive adoption of AI-assisted development, agentic workflows, and automation to improve engineering efficiency and developer experience.

What do you need to apply?

  • 7+ years of experience building highly performant and scalable web applications.
  • Previous experience leading engineering teams or serving in a technical leadership capacity.
  • Strong proficiency in React, Next.js, TypeScript, GraphQL and REST APIs.
  • Experience with Django and Python development
  • Experience designing scalable system architectures and making long-term technical decisions.
  • Experience working closely with product managers, designers, and business stakeholders.
  • Experience with AWS and cloud-native application development.
  • Experience with sophisticated application state management, such as Apollo Client or Redux.
  • Experience with Docker, containerization, CI/CD pipelines, and modern development workflows.
  • Proven track record leading high-performing engineering teams and delivering complex technical initiatives.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Familiarity with AI-driven development workflows, automation, and developer productivity tooling.
  • Strong understanding of security, reliability, and performance best practices in modern web development.
