The job, in the employer's words

About Us:
Comfrt is one of the fastest-growing direct-to-consumer brands, dedicated to blending mental wellness, inclusivity, and elevated comfort into every piece we create. Our mission goes beyond clothing — we strive to build a community where everyone feels supported and seen.

About the Role:
The People & Culture Business Partner, Retail will serve as a trusted partner to Comfrt’s retail leadership team, supporting our growing store organization across the full employee lifecycle.

As Comfrt continues to expand its retail footprint, this role will help build and maintain a strong, consistent, and people-first employee experience across our stores. You’ll partner closely with Store Managers, Assistant Store Managers, and retail leadership to provide practical People guidance, coach leaders, support employee relations matters, and ensure our People practices scale alongside the business.

This is a highly hands-on role for someone who enjoys being close to the business, building strong relationships, solving problems, and moving quickly. You’ll work closely with the Director of People & Culture and broader People team to translate company-wide People strategies into an effective retail experience.

Responsibilities:

Retail Partnership & Leadership Support

  • Serve as a trusted People partner to Store Managers, Assistant Store Managers, and retail leadership across Comfrt’s growing store footprint.
  • Provide day-to-day guidance and coaching to retail leaders on employee relations, performance management, attendance, development, recognition, and People policies.
  • Build strong relationships with retail leadership and employees, becoming a visible and approachable People resource within the organization.
  • Partner with retail leadership to identify People-related challenges and opportunities and develop practical, solutions-oriented recommendations.
  • Support leaders in creating a high-performing, engaged, and inclusive store environment aligned with Comfrt’s culture and values.

Employee Relations & Performance Management

  • Serve as point of contact for escalated employee questions, concerns, and workplace issues, ensuring employees feel heard and supported.
  • Partner with the Director of People & Culture on employee relations matters, escalating higher-risk or complex issues appropriately.
  • Support and conduct low-risk employee relations investigations, including gathering information, documenting findings, and partnering with leadership on appropriate next steps.
  • Coach managers through performance management conversations, corrective action, attendance concerns, and other employee situations.
  • Promote consistency and fairness in the application of People policies and practices across retail locations.
  • Maintain appropriate documentation and confidentiality throughout employee relations matters.

Employee Experience & Engagement

  • Help create a consistent Comfrt employee experience across all retail locations.
  • Partner with retail leadership to support engagement, recognition, succession planning, retention, and employee development initiatives.
  • Partner with retail leadership to identify trends and analyze employee engagement, turnover, and retention data, translating insights into targeted initiatives that strengthen the employee experience and drive industry-leading retention.
  • Support the rollout of employee programs, initiatives, and communications across the retail organization.
  • Help ensure our stores feel connected to the broader Comfrt culture as we scale.

Retail Growth & Organizational Support

  • Partner with the People team and retail leadership as Comfrt opens new locations and expands its retail workforce.
  • Support People-related aspects of new store openings, including onboarding, training, employee communications, and organizational readiness.
  • Help assess People needs as the retail organization grows and make recommendations around staffing, structure, policies, training, and employee experience.
  • Support change management efforts associated with organizational growth, new processes, systems, and company initiatives.

People Programs, Compliance & Employment Law

  • Support the administration and execution of key People programs across the retail organization, including performance, compensation, onboarding, training, engagement, and benefits initiatives.
  • Ensure consistent application of Comfrt’s People policies and practices across retail locations.
  • Partner with retail leadership to support compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws, including wage and hour, meal and rest periods, scheduling, leave, accommodations, and workplace safety requirements.
  • Monitor retail-specific compliance requirements and identify potential gaps or risks, partnering with the Director of People & Culture and Legal as appropriate.
  • Partner with People Operations and Payroll to identify and address potential timekeeping, payroll, attendance, and wage-and-hour issues.
  • Support required workplace training and compliance initiatives and ensure retail leaders understand applicable People policies and requirements.
  • Stay current on retail-specific People practices and employment trends, bringing recommendations around scheduling, staffing, retention, manager capability, and the hourly employee experience.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential employee documentation and support audits or compliance reviews as needed.
  • Partner with the Director of People & Culture and Legal on higher-risk employment matters and emerging compliance concerns.

Requirements:

  • 5+ years of progressive HR / People & Culture experience, ideally supporting a multi-location retail workforce.
  • Proven experience partnering with leaders on employee relations, performance management, investigations, and day-to-day People matters.
  • Strong knowledge of federal, state, and local employment laws and sound judgment handling sensitive matters.
  • Excellent communication, relationship-building, organization, and problem-solving skills.
  • Comfortable operating in a fast-paced, evolving environment with a hands-on, solutions-oriented approach.
  • Proficiency with HRIS and People systems; Lattice, ADP, Gusto, Greenhouse, or similar platforms a plus.
  • Ability to travel approximately 20%, including 2–4 visits to retail locations per quarter or as needed.

Why Join Comfrt?

  • Be part of a purpose-driven company that’s shaping the future of comfort and mental wellness.
  • Work in a supportive, creative environment where your ideas and growth are valued.
  • Enjoy Comfrt benefits such as generous paid time off, company-covered health insurance, 5% 401k match, and discounts on all Comfrt products!
  • Join a passionate team making an impact on exciting projects, all while enjoying the flexibility and collaborative support of a fully remote environment.
