The job, in the employer's words

The mission of The New York Times is to seek the truth and help people understand the world. That means independent journalism is at the heart of all we do as a company. It’s why we have a world-renowned newsroom that sends journalists to report on the ground from nearly 160 countries. It’s why we focus deeply on how our readers will experience our journalism, from print to audio to a world-class digital and app destination. And it’s why our business strategy centers on making journalism so good that it’s worth paying for.

About the Role

The New York Times' Motion Graphics team focuses on elevating how animated graphics and motion design are used in our video journalism. Working in close collaboration with Video, Shows and Graphics, the team responds to the demands of stories and formats across the newsroom—from news explainers and visual investigations to enterprise series and shows.

As a member of Digital News Design's Motion Graphics team, you will focus on work for Shows, a department created to expand the reach of The Times's audio and video shows. You will collaborate with reporters, editors, producers, art directors and show hosts to craft motion assets and visuals for our expanding roster of shows across a range of formats and platforms.

You will be responsible for identifying creative needs and producing a range of design assets, including motion graphics, typography, animations, and MOGRT templates. In consultation with editors and other newsroom leaders, you'll exercise journalistic judgment and visual creativity to innovate and ensure accuracy, clarity, and validity of the content presented. Design team members are expected not only to make exceptional contributions to our journalism, but also to engage with others to foster an environment of learning and constructive dialogue about our work.

This is an in-office position based in New York and includes regular attendance in the office four days each week. There may be some flexibility to work remotely per your departmental guidance.

Responsibilities:

  • Create original designs and craft video toolkits for a range of shows and show formats.
  • Work collaboratively with show producers, and editors to create engaging and informative videos.
  • Convey visual story ideas and complex information in engaging video sequences and animation.
  • Work alongside other Times design teams to ensure consistent visual languages, and develop best practices.
  • Be a pragmatic innovator whose solutions elicit responses that justify the effort and investment.
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.
  • You will report to the Motion Graphics Editor.

Basic Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of motion design experience. Expertise with After Effects, designing for motion and animation is essential.
  • Expertise with Figma, Photoshop, Illustrator and Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Strong portfolio of design work.
  • Solid understanding of layout, typography, and storytelling techniques.
  • Experience creating visual presentations that intelligently incorporate audio, video, still images and text.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Enthusiasm for designing and making great animations and design for storytelling to cover current events for The New York Times.
  • Experience making quick decisions under deadlines and a high-pressure newsroom environment.
  • Experience working collaboratively with members of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Experience meeting deadlines and to adapt to change in a daily, unpredictable news and production environment
  • Open to working a flexible schedule.
