The job, in the employer's words

The mission of The New York Times is to seek the truth and help people understand the world. That means independent journalism is at the heart of all we do as a company. It’s why we have a world-renowned newsroom that sends journalists to report on the ground from nearly 160 countries. It’s why we focus deeply on how our readers will experience our journalism, from print to audio to a world-class digital and app destination. And it’s why our business strategy centers on making journalism so good that it’s worth paying for.

The New York Times Opinion department is seeking a visionary, high-level editorial leader to join its ranks. This role is designed for a sophisticated editor with a proven track record of shaping world-class journalism, managing high-profile talent and driving the cultural conversation. The ideal candidate will bring expertise in narrative development and a keen eye for talent, specifically focused on elevated commentary and long-form storytelling.

This position requires a rare blend of intellectual rigor, creative ambition and the tactical skill necessary to edit the world's leading columnists and thinkers.

This is an in-office position, based in New York City and includes regular attendance in the office four days each week. There may be some flexibility to work remotely per your departmental guidance.

Responsibilities:

  • Conceptualize and execute ambitious editorial projects, pieces and series that go beyond the daily news cycle to provide lasting insight
  • Manage and edit a portfolio of New York Times columnists, providing high-touch guidance on narrative arc, voice and argument
  • Partner across design, multimedia and audience teams to ensure that Opinion's most important work reaches its widest possible impact
  • Identify, recruit, and develop new voices to expand the breadth and depth of Opinion's coverage, ensuring a diverse and provocative range of perspectives
  • Oversee the lifecycle of commentary from pitch to publication, ensuring every piece meets the highest standards of intellectual honesty and literary excellence
  • Mentor junior editors and staff, fostering a culture of rigorous editing, creative risk-taking and professional growth
  • Collaborate with senior leadership to set the strategic editorial direction for the department, anticipating major news cycles and cultural shifts
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world
  • You will report to the Opinion Editorial Director.

Basic Qualifications:

  • 8+ years of experience in senior editorial roles at a major national publication
  • A deep portfolio of editing work that has shaped public discourse or won major industry accolades
  • Proven ability to edit high-profile writers, columnists and public intellectuals with sensitivity and authority
  • Proven talent for transforming complex ideas into compelling, accessible, and urgent narratives

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Sophisticated understanding of the digital media landscape and the evolving nature of opinion journalism
  • A robust network within the literary, academic and journalistic communities
  • Experience managing cross-functional teams
